Tainan & Taichung

If you are planning to explore outside of Taipei while in Taiwan, make sure to make a trip down south to visit Tainan and Taichung. I had the amazing opportunity to explore the vibrant cities of Tainan and Taichung in Taiwan, with a tranquil detour to the enchanting Sun Moon Lake. Here's a glimpse into my weekend adventure and some advice for fellow travelers seeking a quick getaway.

Exploring Tainan:

My journey began in Tainan, a city steeped in history and culture. I spent my first day going to Sicao Green Tunnel, where I rode a boat and learned more about the landscapes nearby. Then, we strolled around the city, taking in the sights of both energetic streets and cultural landmarks.

One cannot visit Tainan without indulging in its culinary delights. I savored traditional street food at Garden Night Market, tantalizing my taste buds with lemon kumquat drinks and coffin bread, which is a buttery toast that is hollowed to be filled up with a creamy soup. Other than the night market, I also got to try the famous Chou's shrimp rolls with danzai noodles, migao at Luo Cheng, and milkfish soup.

Advice for Tainan:

For future travelers to Tainan, buses are a little unreliable, so my friends and I Ubered to get around. Don't hesitate to try the local delicacies at the night markets, and be sure to take things slow to take in the beauty of the city.

Venturing into Taichung:

On the second day of my journey, I made my way to Taichung, a vibrant metropolis known for its modernity and creativity. Taichung captivated me with its dynamic arts scene and eclectic alleyways.

In addition to its artistic allure, Taichung boasts verdant parks and tranquil spaces that offer respite from the urban bustle. I spent an afternoon strolling through Taichung Park, marveling at the serene beauty of its landscaped gardens and picturesque pavilions.

In terms of the food scene, make sure to make a stop at Feng Chia Night Market, where you can buy foods like little sausage wrapped in big sausage, the famous Ming Lun scallion pancake, Thai milk tea, and of course seafood items like grilled squid. Besides night markets, I was able to enjoy a braised pork bento at Second Market, ice cream at Miyahara, and cafe foods at Hecho Cafe.

Detour to Sun Moon Lake:

No visit to central Taiwan would be complete without a trip to Sun Moon Lake, a breathtakingly beautiful destination nestled amidst lush green mountains. I embarked on a scenic drive to the lake, where I was greeted by panoramic views of tranquil waters and verdant landscapes. I spent a blissful afternoon cruising along the lake aboard a ferry, which is how you will be getting across the lake.

For travelers planning a visit to Sun Moon Lake, I recommend taking the time to explore its scenic surroundings. Visit the temple to see some magnificent views, and make sure to take the cable car to see both mountain and lake views. If you are hungry, make sure to go to Ita Thao Shopping Street. I got rice cakes, a honey lemon drink, and black tea ice cream.

Conclusion:

My weekend adventure exploring Tainan, Taichung, and Sun Moon Lake was a testament to the rich diversity and natural beauty of Taiwan. From the historical streets of Tainan to the artistic charm of Taichung and the serene tranquility of Sun Moon Lake, each destination left an indelible mark on my soul. As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the wonders of central Taiwan and eagerly anticipate my next adventure in this captivating region.
