Adjusting to Life in Taiwan: A Student's Perspective Studying abroad in Taiwan is an exciting, but challenging experience. As a student who has adjusted to life in Taiwan, I want to share my personal experiences when navigating the cultural differences. Adapting to the Local Customs Coming from Hawaii, I am use to the hospitality and friendliness of everyone around me. While Taiwanese people are not rude, they won't go out of their way to strike a conversation or give a nod of acknowledgement when you walk past them. Everyone typically just minds their own business and goes along their daily life that way. Another thing to keep in mind is that everyone stands on the right side of the escalator to leave space for those in a rush who want to walk up on the left. So don't be that person who occupies the left side! Making Friends Making friends in a new country can be intimidating, but don't worry, there are plenty of ways to meet new people. Don't be afraid to reach out to that one classmate you met once on social media or on the campus tour, they may end up being one of your closest friends. Dorming also is a perfect opportunity to make friends with your roommates. Don't be afraid to participate in school hosted events or club organizations. NTU hosted a multitude of events for their international students and I was able to meet a bunch of people there. Finding Accommodation Finding accommodation in Taiwan can be a bit challenging, especially if you're not familiar with the local rental market. One option is to live in a dormitory on campus, which is convenient and allows you to meet other students. Another option is to rent an apartment or a room in a shared house. It's important to start your search early and be prepared to provide necessary documents and a deposit. Additionally, consider the location of your accommodation and its proximity to your university and other amenities. I personally live in a dorm arranged by NTU, but it is quite far away from the main campus. Luckily, my dorm arranges a shuttle that takes me from the dorm to the nearest MRT station.

Transportation

Figuring out transportation is a slight learning curve, but everything becomes so much easier after a couple trips. Make sure to have your easy card on hand which is refillable at convenience stores or MRT stations. Google Maps is such a life saver here so make sure your phone battery is charged and ready for your use. Read more on my previous blog post for more about transportation. Exploring the Country Taiwan is a beautiful country with a rich culture and diverse landscapes. Take advantage of your time here to explore as much as possible. From bustling cities like Taipei and Kaohsiung to stunning natural wonders like Taroko Gorge and Sun Moon Lake, there is something for everyone in Taiwan. Plan weekend trips with your friends in advance so you aren't rushing your adventures last minute. Don't forget to try the local cuisine, which is known for its delicious street food and night markets. Exploring the country will not only enhance your cultural understanding but also create unforgettable memories. Adjusting to life in Taiwan may have its challenges, but with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the local culture, you'll soon find yourself feeling at home in this vibrant country. Remember to take advantage of the resources available to you, such as your university's international student office, and don't hesitate to reach out for support when needed. Enjoy your time in Taiwan and embrace all the beauty and uniqueness this country has to offer!
