Get your steps in! Whether it be to grab a quick bite at a nearby convenience store or to get to a bus or MRT station, expect to walk to get to a lot of places. Crosswalks are safe to use, and follow the signals accordingly. There will be a display that tells you how long you have left to cross the street. In alleys and neighborhoods without crosswalks, make sure to look both ways before crossing. Mopeds, bikes, and cars will generally not stop for you unless there are traffic signals or traffic enforcers there.
Taiwan's Efficient Mass Transit Taiwan boasts an extensive and efficient mass transit system, making it easy for travelers to explore the island. The Taipei Metro, also known as the MRT, is the backbone of Taipei's transportation network. With well-planned routes, English signage, and affordable fares, the MRT is the preferred choice for navigating Taiwan's capital city. Use your Easy Card, which can be purchased at any convenience store or at the airport, to get through the turnstiles at a MRT station. Then make sure to line up and enter the correct cars. Transfer to different stations accordingly, and make sure to scan to get out. When entering the MRT, be mindful of where you are sitting, as some seats are for the elderly and disabled. Otherwise, sit tight or hang on while paying attention to each station you pass. There are two doors on each side of the MRT car, so watch for the blinking light to know which one to exit out of.
Convenient Bus Services In addition to trains, buses provide an excellent way to explore Taiwan's cities and countryside. Within urban areas, public buses offer comprehensive coverage and frequent service, making it easy to reach your destination. For longer journeys between cities and towns, consider taking an express or intercity bus. These comfortable coaches provide a cost-effective and scenic way to travel across Taiwan. Like the MRT, you need an Easy Card to ride the buses in Taiwan. Each ride starts at 15 NTD and will increase accordingly depending on how long the ride is or if you transfer buses. You will need to scan your card when you get in and out of the bus and you can enter and exit at both doors of the bus Each bus station has displays that tell you what routes stop at that station and when that bus is projected to arrive at the station. When you see your bus coming, be sure to flag it down by putting your hand out. To get out of the bus, be sure to press the button to signal to the bus driver to stop at your destination. To add more money to your Easy Card, just go to any convenience store and let them know how much you want to add.
Two Wheels Biking is also very popular in Taiwan, so if you are interested, there is a uBike system where you can rent bikes. Mopeds are very popular as well, and you can expect to see a lot of them around. Cars are also an option if you have an international driver’s license and can rent a car. While taxi or private ride-hailing services are definitely options, public transportation is very convenient and cheap, so they are recommended.
Transportation might take some adjustment the first couple of times you take them, but it is easy to get a hang of it. Make sure you have Google Maps on hand, and you should be good to go. Have fun getting around in Taiwan!
